01

Questions about fit

Ask whether the firm handles this kind of incident in the relevant jurisdiction, what information it needs to assess fit, and which lawyer would be responsible. Ask about similar work without requesting predictions.

02

Questions about the working relationship

Who gives updates? How are calls and messages handled? Which decisions require your approval? Who explains significant developments? Ask for a realistic picture of routine communication.

03

Questions about money

How is the lawyer’s fee calculated? Which case expenses may be charged? When are expenses deducted? Could you owe expenses without a recovery? Ask to see the written terms and work through an example.

04

Questions about the immediate next step

Ask what the firm would do first, what it needs from you, and whether there are facts or deadlines that require prompt investigation. Do not use a general guide to calculate a legal deadline.

05

Questions to answer for yourself

Was the explanation understandable? Were uncertainties acknowledged? Do the written terms match the conversation? Are you comfortable with the proposed contact person and decision process?
