01

Define what must fit

Write down the jurisdiction, incident type, known injuries, urgent timing issues, and any accessibility or language needs. These facts create a practical screen before reputation, advertising, or ratings enter the decision.

02

Compare relevant experience carefully

Ask what kinds of similar matters the lawyer has handled and what work the firm expects your matter may require. Do not treat a directory category, past result, or marketing claim as proof that the same outcome is likely.

03

Understand who will do the work

The person conducting an intake call may not be the lawyer responsible later. Ask for the proposed team, supervision structure, and main contact so you can compare operating models as well as credentials.

04

Read before you decide

Review the engagement agreement, fee terms, expense provisions, scope of work, and termination provisions. Ask for clarification in writing when the document and consultation do not seem to match.

05

Verify independently

Use the licensing authority for the relevant state to check the individual lawyer’s status. Verification is a separate step from deciding whether the firm’s experience, communication, and terms fit your needs.
